10 Easy Ways to Save Energy at Home (and Cut Down Your Bills!)

by Tom Dale | Feb 9, 2025 | Blogs, Plumbing

When it comes to keeping your home running smoothly, no one likes wasting energy—or money. The good news? A few simple changes can make a huge difference to your power bills, without sacrificing comfort. Whether you’re in Shoalhaven, Ulladulla, or Nowra, these energy-saving tips will help you cut costs, reduce waste, and keep your home running efficiently.

1) Give Your Hot Water System a Check-Up

Your hot water system is one of the biggest energy users in your home. Over time, sediment and mineral deposits can build up in the tank, making it work harder and use more power. Regular maintenance, like flushing out the system, keeps it running efficiently and your bills in check.

Upgrade to LED Lighting

Old halogen or incandescent bulbs are energy guzzlers. LED lights use up to 80% less electricity and last much longer—so you’ll save on power and replacement costs. If you haven’t switched yet, now’s the time!

3) Turn Off Standby Power

Appliances left on standby (like TVs, gaming consoles, and kitchen gadgets) still draw power—even when they’re not in use. Turning them off at the wall or using smart power boards can help reduce phantom energy use.

4) Adjust Your Thermostat

Every degree counts! In summer, set your air conditioning to 24-26°C, and in winter, aim for 18-20°C. Cranking up the heat or blasting the air con uses way more energy than you actually need.

5) Use Appliances Wisely

Run full loads in your dishwasher and washing machine.

Wash clothes in cold water—it cleans just as well and uses way less power.

Skip the dryer when possible and hang your washing outside in the Shoalhaven sun

6) Insulate and Seal Your Home

A well-insulated home stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Check for drafts around doors and windows, and use door seals and weather stripping to stop heat from escaping (or sneaking in!).

7) Switch to Solar Power

If you haven’t already, solar panels are a great way to slash your electricity bills and make the most of Australia’s sunny climate. Plus, government rebates can make installation more affordable.

8) Be Smart with Your Fridge & Freezer

Keep your fridge between 3-5°C and freezer at -15°C—any colder is a waste.

Defrost regularly to keep things running efficiently.

Don’t overload the fridge, as it makes it work harder to keep everything cool.

9) Install a Smart Meter

A smart meter helps track your energy use in real-time, so you can see where your power is going and adjust your habits accordingly

10)Upgrade to Energy-Efficient Appliances

If your appliances are 10+ years old, they’re probably using way more energy than necessary. Look for high star-rated appliances—they may cost more upfront, but they’ll save you big bucks in the long run.
