EMERGENCY FAQs
What should I do if I cannot stop a water leak?
If you can’t stop the leak, turn off your water at the meter if it’s safe to do so. Move anything valuable away from the water and avoid electrical appliances, power points or switches nearby. If the water keeps coming after you’ve isolated the supply, give a licensed plumber a call.
Should I turn off my hot water system?
If your hot water system is leaking, making unusual noises or appears damaged, turn off the water supply to the unit if you can safely do so. Depending on the type of system, the power or gas may also need to be isolated. If you’re unsure, leave it alone and call a licensed plumber.
When does a blocked drain need a plumber?
If you’ve tried the simple steps in our video and the drain is still blocked, it may be time to call a plumber. Slow drainage, gurgling, bad smells, repeated blockages or wastewater backing up can all be signs there’s a bigger blockage further down the line.
How do I know if I need an electrician?
Burning smells, sparks, buzzing, flickering lights, warm power points or a safety switch that keeps tripping are all signs to stop and call a licensed electrician. If there’s water near electrical wiring, outlets or appliances, stay clear of the area.
What should I do if a pipe bursts?
Turn your water off at the meter straight away. Move furniture and valuables away from the water if it’s safe to do so, and use towels or buckets to contain what you can. If water is near anything electrical, keep clear and call for help.
What should I do if my power suddenly goes out?
First, check whether your neighbours have lost power too. If it seems to be just your home, check your switchboard for a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker. If it trips again after being reset, or you notice burning smells, buzzing or damaged wiring, leave it off and call a licensed electrician.
Is a leaking tap or toilet considered an emergency?
A small drip usually isn’t an emergency, but a tap or toilet that won’t stop running, is overflowing or is releasing a large amount of water should be dealt with quickly. If you can, turn off the local isolation valve until it can be looked at.
